A well-executed dialect can elevate a performance to authentic excellence, while a poorly chosen accent can undermine even the most talented interpretation. This course teaches you to master dialect work as a genuine performance tool rather than an obstacle to authentic acting. When properly executed, a dialect functions as a valuable prop and activity for the voice, connecting you more deeply with your character's physicality and impulses. This approach allows performers to access genuine human behavior on stage or camera rather than retreating into technical acting. An accurately executed and specific dialect can unlock character impulses and reveal qualities that might otherwise remain hidden, building your confidence and versatility as a performer.
Course Structure and Focus Areas:
The class is divided into three distinct sections. During the initial two classes, students learn systematic approaches for acquiring new dialects and receive comprehensive tools for continued study throughout their careers. The curriculum breaks down the learning process from "I cannot perform a Danish accent" to "I can completely perform a Danish accent," providing transferable techniques for acquiring any unfamiliar accent when audition opportunities arise.
Classes three and four concentrate on dialects commonly encountered in auditions. Students develop facility with British, Irish, Scottish, Australian, and various American regional dialects, building a toolkit of accents readily accessible for professional opportunities.
In the final two classes, participants select a specific dialect for intensive study. This focused work allows performers to achieve complete accuracy and confidence with an accent they frequently need in auditions due to their appearance or perceived background. Mastery of this accent becomes a distinct professional advantage in casting situations.
