Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this camera class:

“Want to know a little secret? Making photography books makes you a better photographer. I know, I know, this sounds like a sales line. After all, I’m the “Blurb guy,” but hear me out. Making books, or otherwise putting your work in print, makes you a better photographer because bookmaking forces you to apply critical thought toward your photographs. It’s as simple as that. But what about all the options, the materials, the strategies, trim sizes and the potential risks? This is where bookmaking takes on a level of complexity that requires a better understanding of the full publishing cycle. So why not bring a work in progress, edit, sequence, make decisions, get your hands dirty and walk out with a tangible artifact of your photographic life or story?” – Dan Milnor

Friday night will be all about introducing ourselves, looking at work, and most importantly, getting your hands on a wide range of potential publishing options including Photobooks (of all sizes and shapes), magazines and trade books. In addition, we will talk about publishing in general, self-publishing vs traditional and the rise of the art book, Zine and alternative publishing options. Saturday morning will include a multi-hour presentation about self-publishing realities, history, strategy and the ever-inspiring case study. After the morning session we’ll begin to edit, sequence and build a physical maquette utilizing prints, glue, scissors (or anything else you choose) using a blank book (supplied) of the trim size that best fits your needs. Sunday morning we continue to finalize our “first-look” books. We conclude in the afternoon with a group critique session as one by one, students will showcase their book to the class explaining what they created and why they made the design decisions they did.
Depending on the goal, bookmaking can be a complex process. Many people get confused or stifled by the options and never end up seeing their work in print. This class will not only provide a general understanding of the options available, but will also provide students with the time and resources to transform their idea into a tangible result: the photobook.

NOTE: This is classified as a “Master Photographer” workshop.
