Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this marbling class:

Ebru, also known as Water Marbling is the beautiful ancient art of painting on water and then transferring the image to paper. Learn about the paints, additives and tools required, then create your own unique masterpiece under the guidance of our talented instructor Mustafa Yasar.

Ebru’s original name was Ebre in Jagatai dialect and during its journey through Iran via the Silk Road this name was changed into Ebri (cloud-like) then ABRU (face of water). Seljukian and Ottoman periods saw a widespread performance of this art in the Asia Minor with its final name Ebru. Ebru is the only word used today in Turkey.

As the Europeans discovered this art via merchants and pilgrims at the beginning of the 17th century, they called it Turkish Paper and later Water Marbling.

Ebru Practice:
Traditionally Ebru is done in Water that has been thickened with the addition of the naturally occurring substance, Gum tragacanth, a special type of glue.

Paints obtained form mineral oxides, again another natural product, one mixed with Ox-Gall, and then sprinkled over the surface of the water and dispersed with the help of brushes made from rose branches and horse hair.

The design that occurs on the surface of the water can be given form, motifs and flower Designs can be added, and then placing a sheet of Paper over the design, the design is transferred to the new medium.

This was a delightful class. A brief history of the art, an introduction to techniques and a chance to make your own.

Loved this class. Mustapha is a wonderful teacher. So much fun and learned a lot. The small class size gave everyone a chance to make two pieces. Was just as interesting to marble the paper as it was to watch others. I look forward to taking more classes with him in the future.

The information & technique involved are fascinating but the instructor is there to give information too. He should have given us a handout with all the materials needed & written instructions on how to make the water necessary for it. Additionally, he needed more than 2 water trays for the 15 people, since it takes time to make a painting experimenting with the technique, & only 2 people at a time can have a turn, meaning some people waited til the class was almost over. It also takes time for the paper to dry and more information about this & perhaps where to purchase materials could be given such as websites & stores. But it was an interesting & fun class! I’d recommend it.

Mustafa was an excellent instructor. He was patient and modeled several different designs for us. By the time my friend and I got up to try it on our own I felt very confident in my abilities. I am very happy with the Ebru art I created during the class and hope to do more on my own.

Super enjoyable and such a great intro to Turkish culture and Ebru marbling. The instructor is passionate about this art and is patient with all of the participants. I highly recommend this course for both adults and children. At the end, it was such a treat to have Turkish tea and drink it while learning about book culture and the Ottoman empire, brought me back to when I visited Istanbul.

Extraordinarily beautiful two hour class. Mustafa slowly explained the history and tools used for the “face of water”==Turkish watermarbling as we nine participants were able to snack on great popcorn, tea, and coffee. He demonstrated the possibilities for the colors and designs creating three paintings. We then each were able to do one on our own although he would help with pulling the paper off of the water if one so desired. Definitely, a course I will return to with friends.

Would have liked smaller class size to allow for us to make more than one painting. Some colors ran out by the time we got to paint, so probably a little more paint next time.

Hi Brenda, Thanks for the info, but it didn’t answer my question. Will I need to wear clothing that might get paint on them?
Answer from anonymous
Thank you, Brenda, but this did not answer my question. Do I need to be concerned about my clothing and paint splatter?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
The school will provide everything for the class like an apron and other things but you can bring your own apron if you prefer. They will teach how to use the brush so if students are careful, they should be okay. But if you are concerned about your clothes getting paint on them, you may wear old clothes. Hope this helps, thanks!
