What you'll learn in this beginner drawing class:

You may be interested in drawing and painting, as both an experienced artist or as some one just starting out on the artistic path.

If you are a beginner, the artist -instructor will start you off on the fundamentals of drawing by creating your own still-life of objects to draw. For intermediate and advanced emerging artists, we work with what you are interested in creating, so that you can develop your own vision and style.  Our workshops are suited to all levels of skill and our philosophy stresses "personal vision", as well as learning the science and craft of art.

  • Drawing materials will be provided on the first session: paper, charcoal pencils etc.
  • If you wish to paint, please bring your materials: canvas, brushes, paints, mediums, etc.
  • After consultation with the student, a materials list will be provided to the student after the workshop.
The art classes are offered in the intimate home-studio of the artist in the heart of the Chelsea Art district of New York City.

Please note:
Children ages 13 years of age to 16 yrs can attend, if an accompanying adult takes the class with the child.

Question from Anonymous
I like to draw as a beginner and paint sometimes too. I have a shoulder issue and can't use an easel. Is there a table to lean and draw on in the class setting.? Thanks! Marilyn
Answer from Lucy D. Verified Student
Hi Marilyn! All of the stations were set up as standing at easels, but it was a very informal setting so it may be worth emailing the instructor to ask if there are a small table and seat available instead? Hope it works out!
Answer from Raul S.
Marylin! Yes, there are tables and chairs to sit to draw and paint. You will be very comfortable in the intimate and friendly setting of the workshop. From Rebecca Studio & office manager of Chelsea Drawing & Painting Workshops.

I hadn't drawn seriously at all in my life previously to taking Raphael's class but he does an incredibly neat job laying out the foundations and highlighting a student's innate strong point (we all have a style that we innately prefer to draw in). He's good at guiding each student in terms of developing their styles and preferences, as well as suggesting new techniques to expand on the student's craft. I feel he's not just a great teacher but a mentor as well. Very pleased to have taken classes by Raphael.
