Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this beginner drawing class:

This course explores the fundamental elements of drawing and oil painting from direct observation.

Students will set up and work from a series of still lives to understand the relationships between line, form, proportion, perspective, composition, and light value through monochromatic graphite studies. In the second half of the course, students will apply these foundational skills to their still life paintings and explore the additional concepts of temperature and chroma. Emphasis in this course is on analytical seeing/interpreting of form.

Q&A

Q: Can I make up a class if I miss one?

A: No, there are no makeup classes. Because art is taught with demonstrations and demonstrations are time consuming, if one person misses the class each week, the instructor would spend the first part of each class repeating the demonstration from last week before moving on to the next lesson, which isn't fair to the students who attended. That said, most of our classes are taught atelier style. If there is a demonstration during the particular session, after the demonstration, the instructor goes to each student to work with them on a one-on-one basis. During this time, the instructor can work with you if you missed the previous week to talk and explain what to do.

Q: Are materials provided and included in the cost of the class?

A: Yes.

Refund Policy

100% refund will be issued up to seven days after the first class. After this, no refund will be issued.

MAKE-UP POLICY
Unfortunately, we do not offer makeup classes. The instructor can tell them what they missed. Most of our classes are taught atelier style. If there is a demonstration during the particular session, after the demonstration the instructor goes to each student to work with them on a one-to-one basis. During this time the instructor can work with the student who missed the previous week, talk with them and explain what to do.

While I liked the teacher and appreciated the focus on technique, I found this class to be quite boring and that it stifled creative expression. It perhaps my fault, for not understanding "academic art," the other art classes I have taken at different schools and studios in New York City, pushed me to create and I preferred producing interesting pieces rather than just working on straightforward still lives and spheres in this case.

The class was amazing, I took it with Adam Cross. He did a great job teaching fundamental skills and critiquing our work. The class progresses quickly and you learn a lot each week so it's important to try not to miss any. I was thrilled with what I could do by the end of the class and will continue with painting afterward.

This was the best class that I have ever had in art. I learned more than I have ever had. I just wish there were a follow up class that continues on with we have learned. Mark explained and demonstrated very well. I liked that they supplied what we needed but not that we were supposed to keep it. I am more interested in learning how to draw since that is more convenient to do than painting.

This was such an awesome class. I really looked forward to my Monday nights here. Adam Cross, the instructor, was phenomenal. He was an absolute expert on the matter, and provided constructive criticism, always in a kind manner, basically just giving you tips on how to improve and sharing ideas for things you can do to make your drawing or painting better. He made the class fun and interactive and was genuinely interested and passionate about teaching us art. I did not have prior experience coming into this class, and I didn't feel lost at all. Homework is given for those who want it, and I was pretty impressed with the drawings I could make by Week 4! I highly highly recommend this class for beginners. You will be stunned at the work you've produced by the end of it.

Adam Cross was quite an inspiring, knowledgable and inspired teacher. Easy to talk to, willing to answer any questions, wanting to get to know the students, and great at making the course enjoyable all the way through. This class does teach the fundamentals of drawing and leaves the student with a firm base to move forward with outside of class. I found myself focusing more on the drawing side of the course because all of the students problem solving can and should be done with the pencil. Especially as someone with little to no experience. Although, I did think being introduced to oil paints was fun, worthwhile and even an indispensable part of the course. But again, I think the student who wants to continue on should come with the intent of drawing much much more than oil painting upon finishing the class. This class did a great job of helping the artist mitigate drawing and painting anxiety, setting the student up to continue sighting from real life, still life drawing and painting, and gives a variety of exercises that can and should be used to continue to build upon your own foundation.

Love the school and loved my teacher. I did find the course itself to be rather boring but perhaps that was my own fault for not doing enough research on what I was signing up for.

Question from KC L.
Hi! How is this class split between drawing and painting? Thanks
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! The school feels that drawing is fundamental to learning how to paint so a basic drawing section is taught first in this class, usually for about 6 weeks, and then painting is taught for the last half of the course.

Question from Mi G.
Hi, what kind of painting will be teaching? I’m looking to learn drawing and watercolor painting. Thank you!
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Nikki! The class utilizes water-soluble oil paints. The goal is to teach oil painting, but with an easy cleanup. They do teach watercolor classes, just not in the Introduction to Drawing and painting class. You may check the Watercolor Painting class here: https://coursehorse.com/nyc/classes/art/painting/watercolor/watercolor-painting1. Hope this helps!
