Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this drawing class:

Register now for the Fall Academic year! Ateliers have a long tradition maintaining a standard of the highest quality education and is still the preferred method of learning by serious students. The New York Atelier of Drawing and Design strives to uphold this tradition through dynamic teaching methods and facilitating the finest learning atmosphere.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a beautiful, expansive classroom and drawing studio. The Museum offers comprehensive collections representing “more than 5,000 years of art from across the globe–from the first cities of the ancient world to the works of our time.”

The objective is to vastly improve observational figure drawing and design skills through conceptual understanding of what's being observed.

Semester I: The complexities of figure drawing are organized into three clear concepts 1. Line (the movement of a thing) 2. Form (the thing itself) and 3. Space (where events happen) Each lesson begins with a discussion and demonstration of a specific concept, topics include: designing the gesture with a consideration for the purpose of movement, strategies for achieving accurate proportion, and designing tonal hierarchies that lead to convincing 3dimensional form and space. Art history, and culture are a primary focus for the progressing student as well. Therefore, museum discussions provide insight into the background of the original artist and the culture surrounding that artist.

Semester II: Building upon the principles learned in the first semester, students learn to more accurately draw every aspect of the figure from observation including the successful portrait, hands, and feet. Students also obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the musculoskeletal system, properties of light–the multi-form phenomenon, and the movement of space. Art history, and culture are a primary focus for the progressing student as well. Therefore, museum discussions provide insight into the background of the original artist and the culture surrounding that artist.

In consideration for students who have additional studies during the academic school year, atelier classes at NYADD meet once a week.
