Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this construction project management certificate program:

In response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in New York State, Pace University is extending the remote learning period on all campuses, including New York City, Pleasantville, and White Plains, through the end of the spring semester. While in-person class sessions will not be held, classes will meet via an online format. Students should check their Pace email, read Blackboard announcements, and contact their instructor for further direction.

Master the Essentials of Construction Project Management. This innovative course provides the construction-orientated professional with the practical knowledge and expertise in project cost estimation, project scheduling, and managing key business concepts in the field of construction.

Participants will receive a Pace University Certificate of Completion. This course is approved for 22.5 hours of continuing education for real estate salespersons and brokers (NYS approved).

The field of construction management is heterogeneous and enormously complex. There are several major classifications of construction that differ markedly from each other: housing, nonresidential building, heavy, highway, utility, and industrial projects. Such projects involve much time and expense, and close management control of them is required if they are to be completed within the established time and cost limitations. A construction manager is in charge of the overall planning and control of a project; this demands a command of many skills.

The Construction Project Management Certificate program is designed to provide you with the knowledge of the regulatory, insurance, management, safety, estimating, and environmental aspects of the construction management industry.

Program topics:

  • Determining the cost for construction and evaluating cost performance
  • Establishing construction schedules
  • Applying time value of money concepts for evaluation of alternatives
  • Value engineering and performance management

  • Individuals new to the field of construction
  • Construction project planners and designers, engineers
  • Those under contract with or employed by the owner, developer, or management firm overseeing a construction project

Question from anonymous
Will we learn about Gantt?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
The instructor do show the students' schedules which include Gantt charts and have a brief reference to Henry Gantt, the creator of these chart types, in a slide regarding the history of scheduling in construction. Current scheduling software automatically creates the Gantt chart based on activity durations and start dates, so there is not much "thought" that as PMs have to put into creating the chart itself other than schedule logic, which is covered more extensively in the course.

Question from anonymous
I will be on a business trip during one of the sessions. Is there material to read or catch up for the session I will miss?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Each class has a different policy when it comes to make-ups and it depends on the instructor. Generally, we discourage more than one absence especially for our shorter classes because they would be missing so much class content. However, if the student can let the instructor know in advance, they can help provide the missed material in advance or arrange to have their fellow students share their class notes.

Question from Raimundo R.
I'm a mechanical/plumbing design engineer and wish to take this course in October. My objective is to be exposed to construction cost estimation both in general and specific to my field of MEP. Does the course go into details for cost estimation for MEP systems? Also, does the course focus on construction cost estimation in NYC only? Thanks in advance.
Answer from anonymous
I am interested in obtaining this certification, but I have limitations in English language proficiency. I am Spanish speaking. Do you have a session for Spanish speakers or have you planned to enable one for this Construction Project Management certificate?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hey there! The school does not have a Spanish speaking session of this course. We haven’t had many demands for a Spanish speaking session so they don’t have plans to begin one but it’s something they'd definitely consider if the demand for one increased.
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hey Raimundo! The CPM class is meant as an overview of the overall construction process. The class will look at elements of cost estimation but doesn’t do as deep of a dive as our construction cost estimating class will next semester. Our instructors are NYC based so a majority of the class content presents both broader general theory and more specifically, NYC practices. Mechanical plumbing will certainly be an element of the class but given the larger and sometimes introductory nature of the course, it may not go into the specific details that the student is looking to learn.

Question from Mohamad A.
To whom it concerns, This is Mohamad Abed Al Muti, a graduated Civil and Environmental Engineer of class 2017 in BAU university in Lebanon. I am looking for a workshop in "Construction Project Management" in order to improve my skills for getting experience in this field. I just have a question regarding after the payment method is done, how long it needs for receiving the invitation letter? Thanks in advance.
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Mohamad! Unfortunately, Pace University is unable to send official invitations to help students acquire travel visas. Since the classes are “not for college credit” courses, they do not meet the requirements and pre-requisites to obtain a travel visa. Hope this helps.

Question from Tony A.
My concern here is paying for talking points. Does the curriculum cover a solid portion of pertinent material for those of us preparing for tests outside of New York? Is there a recommended book list? Is the curriculum standard practices or state based? What are the credentials of the professors, are they strictly academic or are they from the industry? Is Pace an accredited institution? if so a website besides Pace should be added to the response. Thank you for your time in these matters
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Tony! The curriculum covers a large, intensive amount of material and is covered by CCM certified professionals currently working in the field. Our students are typically those looking to switch careers into the construction field or those already working in the field and looking to move up at their jobs. For those who have spent many years working at a high level in the construction industry, this class may not provide the supplemental information that they are looking for and may find that they have already learned the curriculum on the job. The curriculum is generated by the individual instructor and can vary between instructors. In regards to your specific question about a location, the material covers general construction concepts and practices but it is also New York-based and doesn’t include specific information for other locations outside of general practices and theory. Pace University is an accredited institution but it is worth mentioning that my department at Pace focuses on career-focused “not for credit” courses. As a result, the class awards a Certificate of Completion at the end of the course but not a “certification” or transferable college credits.

Question from Anonymous
Hello, Would you recommend this class to people with limited experience in construction management and who want to get started in the industry? Is there any previous experience required/preferred before starting this course? Thanks!
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! No previous experience is required for the course but the school has found that a large number of their students come in with prior knowledge or on-site experience. However, this class in particular is a good class for someone with limited experience because it follows a broader overview of the Construction Management process from beginning to end.

Question from Anonymous
Hi there, Does this course cover blueprint reading? If so, into what detail? Thanks
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hello, there! This covers Blueprint reading briefly because it offers a general overview of the construction project business. However, it has an expectation that the student is already familiar with blueprints. If you are looking to learn about blueprint reading, we do have an “Introduction To Blueprint Reading” course coming up and are in the process of scheduling an “Intermediate BPR” class in May. If you are looking to learn about blueprints, I would suggest the Intro course. Question from VMB
Does this class also cover the same material that is covered in the cost estimating certification course?
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! The Construction Project Management course touches on cost estimating as an essential part of managing a construction project, but it does not go into the same level of detail as the course dedicated entirely to the subject of Cost Estimating does. Construction Project Management also touches on aspects of our other courses, including project scheduling, construction law, blueprint reading, and general project management principles.

Question from Lauren S.
Hi, if I wasn’t able to attend one class, is it possible to make up the class or be provided with the subject matter that I missed?
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Lauren! Unfortunately, the school is not currently running another concurrent section of this class that would allow the student to attend a make-up class. The school recommendation, in the event of an unforeseen absence, is for the student to work with the instructor (and/or fellow students) to get the materials they missed and do whatever is necessary to catch up. But unfortunately, make-up classes are not an option at this time.
