Class Description

Description

Ready to dive into the world of fine woodworking and develop the skills to continue your craft long after the workshop ends? Introduction to Furniture Making provides exactly that foundation. This intensive 12-hour workshop establishes essential woodworking knowledge and techniques for students eager to begin their journey into professional-quality furniture creation.

Throughout the course, students will learn critical woodworking concepts and hands-on techniques, including:

  • Understanding the properties and characteristics of different wood species
  • How and where to source quality lumber
  • Precision wood joinery techniques that eliminate the need for screws or fasteners
  • Proper glue-up techniques for table tops and similar projects
  • Safe practices and operation of major woodworking equipment, including miter saws, table saws, bandsaws, and more

Working under expert instructor guidance, each student will complete a handcrafted side table as their final project. You will leave the workshop with confidence and the competence to tackle additional woodworking projects independently.

Important Workshop Information:

  • No previous woodworking experience is required to participate.
  • Upon enrollment, students commit to attending all scheduled workshop dates. If a student must miss a session, a makeup session must be scheduled with the instructor and is subject to the current private teaching rates.
  • Wear fitted clothing and avoid loose garments, jewelry, or necklaces that could be caught by equipment.
  • All materials are provided. Please note that sawdust will be present in the workspace. Wearing a dust mask is strongly recommended. Eye and ear protection will be provided, though you are welcome to bring your own equipment.

  • Introduction to Furniture Making

I enjoyed the class and the instructor. The project was a bit rushed, and could have used at least one more day, as our 2nd day ran several hours overtime. I would have rather had a more organized introduction where instead of jumping into the first step of the project, the instructor gave an overview of the process first. Also, I would say that an Introduction to Furniture Making should spend some time on finishing techniques, instead of just ending with an unfinished project. I think that the DIY joint is a great facility, and I would do a course there again.

Dave was very patient and took time to explain each step thoroughly. Nobody lost a finger either and we got to take home a beautiful little table. I learned a lot.
  • Introduction to Furniture Making

I was a complete beginner and loved it. It was less of an uphill battle than i expected, I guess because Priscilla must be used to newbies. I can vouch for someone like me: curious and excited who needs someone to repeat things at least once when it comes to the table saw. I made a few mistakes but we corrected them and now i have an extra table.

great course. small, intimate and well-designed.
  • Introduction to Furniture Making

This was a good class, but i would be lying if I wasn't a bit disappointed. Priscilla did not teach the class, and when the fill in teacher was busy one weekend they opted to push the whole class back a week making the end date July, 8th instead of July 1st. The fill in teacher is very nice and incredibly talented, but he runs the class very slowly which has caused us to fall behind schedule to the point where we may need to add on another week. I personally cannot dedicate another weekend to this class and I live and work in Queens, so I cannot travel there during the week. So with that said...if we do not complete the project during the 5th class I am unsure what I am suppose to do. Considering how expensive this class is, I think it's unacceptable. However, I have learned a lot, so I am happy with the knowledge I have gained, but I am disappointed with how the scheduling has been handled.

This class was great! Priscilla was very patient and made sure we clearly understood before moving forward with any step. I had some experience with woodwork but nothing this fine and precise which was incredibly satisfying. She has a lot of great tools/machines and she's obviously excited to teach you about the capabilities of each. You learn a LOT in the few weeks of the course and feel empowered. For any makers our there who might have ideas for building things, this is a great class to take to learn everything you need to! Highly recommend it! (And it's a short walk from the Hoboken Path station, so coming from Brooklyn isn't bad at all.)
  • Introduction to Furniture Making

This furniture building was one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling things I did this year. Not only did I learn a ton about the the furniture making process, including the materials, tools, and processes involved, but I also met several interesting people from all over the NY/NJ area. Priscilla is an energetic and bright instructor and was able to fill all of our brains with knowledge and experience regardless of our technical ability going into the course. I would *highly* recommend this class to people of all creative/skill levels, and I look forward to taking more classes at The DIY Joint in the coming months!
